It’s A Brave New World We Live In

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. George Orwell

You may have thought after yesterday’s rant that I was giving up; tossing in the towel. Not so, you’re not getting rid of me that easily. Writing is therapy for me; it helps me get things off my chest and it keeps my mind sharp. Alzheimer’s is hereditary in my family and I hope to stave it off as long as possible by keeping my mind active by writing these little rants. So if you thought I’d given up, that you no longer were going to have to deal with these things; sorry to ruin your day.

I always like to give credit when credit is due to those who inspire these rants of mine. Yesterday after finishing my daily rant I had to run out and buy some postage stamps. My friend Ray mentioned that I’ve been ‘extremely’ busy lately; implying that I’ve been writing my ass off. We then got to talking about how the company I work for is having Active Shooter Training this coming Friday. Ray commented, “It’s a whole new world out there.” And WHAM, the seed for this article was planted. So thanks Ray.

When I was but a wee lad attending the public fool system, (school) things had not yet reached the point where they were producing hordes of mindless zombies, (graduates) who accepted whatever the government and media told them without question. We actually had to read books and do things like discuss them in class and then write book reports afterwards.

Three decades later I had a son of my own who was graduating from high school. Not once during his time in the public fool system did he have to read a book and write a book report on it; and only one time did he have to write a report of any kind. I broached this matter once to one of his teachers at an Open House and all she’d say about it was, “Oh, we don’t do that anymore.”

Today our children are growing up not learning how to think, or to research for that matter. I often wonder if they could find a listing for something they needed in the Yellow Pages if they had to without the aid of their iPhone and Google.

I was at a Sam’s Club a week or so ago and even with a cash register that showed the exact amount of change I was due I could see the gears struggling to turn in the cashiers head as to how many quarters, dimes and nickels it took to produce the proper amount of change. I was waiting for smoke to start coming out his ears as his brain overheated.

Is that how poorly our children are being educated?

There were books that I was required to read before I even started high school that my son had never heard of; books like Lord of the Flies, Nineteen Eight-Four, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and the anti-war classic Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo.

In today’s PC world where books like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are considered racist, it is no wonder books such as those mentioned are not part of the curriculum. Those who decide the subject matter to be taught our children do not want to produce graduates who are capable of seeing that the plots in some of these novels are happening in real life right before their very eyes.

Maybe it is because I was required to read those books as a youth that I am capable of seeing how badly things have gone wrong in this country. But then again there are those who attended school right beside me who can’t see things from my perspective; so maybe it’s just that I’m wired differently; my mind works differently than others. Or it could be the drugs I took in high school permanently altered my brain chemistry and produced this non-conformist that I am today. Who knows?

Anyway, books like the ones mentioned are not something you pick up, read, and then put down and forget; not if your brain is firing on all 8 cylinders anyway. If you read those books they will leave a lasting impression on your psyche; at least they did to me. To show how much they affected me, the rock band Metallica did a song called One, off their album And Justice For All, which was based upon the book Johnny Got His Gun. Every time I hear it I get goose bumps; the book it was based upon left that big an impression on me.

America is fixated upon labeling things; especially generations. I myself am a Baby Boomer, a child born to parents immediately following the end of World War II. As I’ve said before, I’m named after my father’s best friend who died aboard the USS Helena when it was sunk at the Battle of Kula Gulf on July 6, 1943. In my writings I have mentioned often how things are much different today than they were when I was growing up.

Recently I read the Stephen King novel 11/22/63. The story is about a man who travels back in time to prevent the Kennedy assassination. As I was reading it I almost felt transported myself; the atmosphere King created was very similar to what I remember it being as a child. Sure, things weren’t perfect, they never will be if that is of any consolation, but they were much better in some regards.

When I was growing up kids obeyed their parents; or got a spanking. It was yes sir, no sir, or yes ma’am, no ma’am; no smart-assed back talk; or you got the belt. That may be considered abuse these days; but kids grew up respecting authority and there was far fewer problems with kids doing stupid shit than there is now. Sure we rebelled now and then when we became teens, but we usually turned out okay. It is no wonder today’s world is filled with kids who do all these horrible things; it is because they are not being taught the differences between right and wrong and they are not being given any discipline.

That does not mean we grew up to become mindless zombies who obeyed authority without question though; we were also taught to differentiate between right and wrong, good and evil, and to stand up for right; for good. It is why many of us today see the wrong, the evil spreading across America; and it sickens our stomachs that what we grew up believing to be wrong is now tolerated and accepted as normal behavior.

Just look at the world we live in and ask yourselves what’s wrong with it; children being prescribed drugs because parents and teachers are unwilling to discipline them; instead they just dope them up to keep them calm and docile, we are being told by those in authority that it is okay for men to use women’s restrooms, and those who stand up for their rights are being treated as if they were the criminals. It makes one wonder if the whole world hasn’t gone mad.

You may not realize it, but everything you do, everything you read, everything you see gets stored in your brain. You may forget it’s there, but it is; hidden away among the cobwebs, waiting for something to trigger a memory and call that forgotten fact/event/image out of your mental archives and back into the light.

As I have watched all these changes occur in the country I love I often think back to those novels I read as a kid of dystopian worlds and wonder if the authors of these novels weren’t prophetic. The changes I have seen take place lead me to believe that eventually we will end up in a world just like the ones written about by authors such as Huxley and Orwell.

Had you read Brave New World or Nineteen Eighty-Four you could not have missed the similarity between the fictional worlds the authors wrote of and the world we live in today. Critical thinking is discouraged and passive obedience to authority is drummed into our children’s heads; creating entire generations of adults who lack either the ability to think about how bad things are in America, or lack the willingness to do anything to reverse the course our nation is on.

Consumerism is everywhere; buy this, buy that, buy now, pay later. We have twenty four hours a day shopping channels for crying out loud! Our holidays have become shopping events where you get 0 down, 0% interest for six months on a new car or truck. People buy shit they never knew they needed just because it is 25% off the suggested retail price. It’s absolutely insane if you ask me.

There is also the constant quest for entertainment. The easiest way to keep people’s minds off how bad things are is to keep them distracted. The Romans did it with the games of the Coliseum and our modern equivalent is professional sports and around the clock TV shows. One flips over to the news for half an hour to an hour, not realizing that the same people who own, and dictate what news we are being given, are the same people who own and provide you with your favorite Sitcom or Reality TV show. Your minds are being manipulated and kept entertained by our own version of Big Brother; and you are incapable of even realizing it.

Then there is this; we are now told that sexual deviancy is normal, and that those who speak out against it are the ones who are abnormal. When I was a kid we had a word for it; queer, because that is the definition of the word queer; something that is strange, odd, and abnormal. I just read something this morning, and can’t verify the validity of it, but it said that there are 12 deviancies that are on the horizon to be treated as normal behavior. Among them are bestiality and pedophilia; all this according to a secret memo spoken of by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Again, I can’t verify the validity of that, but as screwed up as things are now it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

And finally, look at how medicated we are becoming as a people. All these mental illnesses and disorders we are told we suffer from; and all the prescription drugs we are being given to treat these ailments are just like the world written about in Nineteen Eighty-Four where the people take their Soma to keep them calm, docile, and unaware of how fucked up their lives are. (Sorry for the obscenity but it was the ONLY word that fit)

Look at our world today, critical thinking is becoming an all but lost skill. Rote and memorization are replacing the ability to analyze facts and data and come to an informed conclusion. Instead of saving up to buy the things you want, credit is encouraged to go out and buy now, pay later; leaving people buried in debt with no alternative but to file for bankruptcy to get out of it. People we used to call queers are now considered gay; with all sorts of rights associated with their being ‘different.’ Hell, the president has said that men that believe themself to be women can now use women’s restrooms. Had a man walked into a woman’s restroom in the 60’s and early 70’s he wouldn’t have been able to walk out; he’d have gotten his ass kicked. And look at all the drugs being prescribed for all these so-called mental illnesses; Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil just to name a few. We’re creating a society in which half the people are under some kind of medication for mental illness; which in reality is keeping people docile and submissive. The unfortunate thing is these drugs also have the nasty side effect of producing people likely to go on suicidal shooting sprees.

I’d swear Orwell or Huxley’s worlds have materialized right in front of me; and it scares the shit out of me!

Look at how society views those who decide they want no part of the system; who only want to be independent; they are labeled and denigrated and often attacked. People who seek to become truly self-sufficient and prepared for any emergency are labeled nutcases, preppers, or some other derogatory nickname. Being independent has become abnormal, almost a disease in and of itself when it used to be a trait people sought.

And questioning, or standing up to the almighty government? That is unthinkable!

I don’t spend too much time talking of conspiracy theories because I have enough trouble getting people to understand the very basics about our system of government. Talking about some of the things I believe might cause people’s heads to explode, or at the least cause them to turn me in as a potential threat to society.

But I see a time, and not too far in the future, when people such as myself; critical thinkers, independent minded, and tired of the abuse of power by government will be rounded up, put into some form of concentration, (FEMA), camp, or simply executed.

Oh sure, it will be said on the news that we posed a threat to society; but that will be a lie. What people need to understand is that we pose no threat to anyone but the government itself. If you leave us alone; we’ll leave you alone. The problem is that if enough people see that they too can live free and independent from governmental intrusion in their lives; it may catch on. Government cannot let that happen as it would threaten its power and authority; so they will seek to stop any movement which seeks to lessen governments control over the lives of the people.

Just look at what government did to LaVoy Finicum. He had the law on his side; he was in the right from a Constitutional standpoint. That didn’t stop the government, and their flunkies in law enforcement, from gunning him down, then calling HIM, of all people, a terrorist.

Were you to do a web search regarding public opinion of either Mr. Finicum, or the Bundy’s, you would find the overall public sentiment to be in opposition to them. People have been conditioned to believe all they hear on the news, or from the lips of those in positions of power. They no longer seek to find out whether they are being told all the facts, or whether they are being lied to outright. So they go about believing people who stand up for their rights, or stand for limited government pose a threat to the ‘American Dream’.

Most people have no idea what kind of dreams our nation’s Founders had for this country; what they envisioned for posterity when they fought a war for independence, or established a Constitution giving government limited power.

Standing up for what’s right and defending yourself have become politically incorrect beliefs. Free speech is all but gone with people having to tip toe around; watching what they say so as not to offend someone’s precious little feelings.

It certainly is a whole new world we live in; and to tell you the truth I don’t like it very much.
