I don’t get much feedback on these articles I write, aside from being turned in to Human Resources at work when I say something particularly offensive and some thin-skinned individual decides to turn me in. Therefore, I don’t really know what passes through my target audience’s minds when they read these commentaries; if they read them at all.
I do, however, get the impression that a good number of people find my decision not to participate in this year’s presidential election a betrayal of all I claim to stand for. I think they believe that by my not supporting Trump I am handing the election to Hillary on a silver platter.
It’s not that I do not agree with much of what Trump says; it’s just that I disagree with him as president doing these things without Congressional approval; that’s not how our system was designed to operate. People, especially those on the right who call themselves conservatives, bemoan the abuses of Executive Authority exercised by Barack Obama; which is fine. But then they are willing to support a candidate like Trump doing the same thing; simply because the things he plans to do fall in line with the things they expect out of government.
Now I’m not singling out those on the right, you Republicans who support Trump as I’m sure the same thing would happen if Trump were currently in office abusing his authority as president and Obama was running for president to replace him. Abuse of presidential power and an overstepping of the boundaries between Executive and Legislative branches are offensive to me regardless of whether I support the intended goals of such violations of the Constitution.
It all boils down to the age old lesser of two evils thing; and I’m tired of voting for evil; no matter which side of the political fence they sit on. It is this voting for the lesser of two evils that got us into this mess to begin with, and continuing to do so IS NOT going to fix all that is wrong with this country; it will only postpone the inevitable.
Let’s just say Trump wins; which is currently doubtful as most polls show him trailing Hillary by anywhere from 5-12 percentage points, but let’s just say he does manage to pull it out and win; then what? Say Trump wins and he fulfills all his promises to bring jobs back to America, kick ISIS’s ass, and build his wall between Mexico and the United States. So what?
What has happened to America has been happening since the end of the Civil War when the federal government proclaimed itself to be sovereign over the will of the people and the individual States which comprise this Union. It would take far more than 4 or 8 years of a Trump presidency to undo the damage that’s been done.
Do any of you understand the Law of Momentum? Basically it deals with mass and velocity and how long an object will continue will continue moving without outside force being applied, or how long it will take for it to come to rest.
When I was in the Air Force stationed in Korea, whenever we went on deployment I always, and I mean ALWAYS got stuck driving an 1800 gallon fuel truck towing a 600 gallon fuel trailer. That’s a lot of damned weight and it took a long time to get from 0 to 60, let me tell you. It also took a long damned time to stop; it wasn’t like some compact car that you could slam on the brakes and stop in less than a couple hundred feet. Stopping all that weight from 50-60 mph took anywhere from a quarter to a half mile; simply because of the momentum it had behind it.
That’s the way I see our country now; there is too much momentum behind our downfall for a 4 or 8 year president to reverse, or stop; and that would go for a president far better than Trump as well. Trump may stand for things that I find myself agreeing with, but I have yet to hear him say he will do anything to downsize government, reduces its spying upon its citizens, or restore any of our lost liberty.
The way I see it, a Trump presidency is a speed bump in our steady downfall into total and absolute tyranny; it might slow things down for awhile, but it won’t stop the inevitable. I’m simply tired of half measures, or band aids which hide the real problem; government is just too damned big and too damned oppressive. Trump won’t fix that even if he is a better choice than Hillary.
It has been said that our system of government was an experiment in self governance; that it rested upon two vital characteristics; the knowledge of the people regarding how the system was supposed to function, and two, the virtue of the people who go to the polls and vote for those who will represent them.
We have failed in both…miserably!
Nine out of ten people, and I’m being generous, couldn’t tell you how many Articles there are in our Constitution, let alone what each Article said. These same people couldn’t tell you what each right the first ten amendments to the Constitution protect.
James Madison once said, “A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.”
Our government, regardless of what you’ve been told, rests on one simple premise; that it is a body of men, and women, chosen by the people to exercise specific powers on our behalf. At the same time this government was instituted to protect the liberty of the people it represents.
The moment the people this government represents become ignorant of this fact, and allow government to exercise powers it was never intended it possess, or begin depriving us of the liberty it was instituted to protect, we take a step down the path to tyranny. The longer we stay on that path the harder it will be to find our way back to limited government and complete freedom to exercise our rights as our Founders intended.
Is Hillary a worse choice for president than Trump? Absolutely. But look at the polling data, anywhere from 42% – 51% of the registered voters in this country support her. That says volumes regarding the ignorance of the American people right there.
When the fact that she has violated numerous federal laws and is under investigation by the Justice Department, yet none of this matters because she is going to do things that a majority of the people in this country agree with; we are, to put it mildly, screwed.
I’m only human people, I can only tolerate so much ignorance, so much apathy, before I snap and say to hell with it, you deserve what’s coming. I love this country, more than most of you could ever possibly imagine; but I love it because of the principles it was founded upon, not because of the opportunity for employment is better or because we are a great and mighty empire that throws its weight around the world forcing our beliefs upon the rest of the world.
When a majority of the people, and this goes for both Republicans and Democrats, have abandoned the principles which led our Founders to fight the British for their independence, I no longer see much to love about the people in this country. In fact, I feel that they deserve what their ignorance is going to end up giving them.
People call me unpatriotic, even dangerous to the American way of life. It is ironic that I feel the same about most of them. I suppose history will be the judge of who was right.
For going on two decades now I’ve been scribbling out these articles, hoping that the people I send them out to will show the same enthusiasm for the information I was discovering. My hopes were dashed and my faith in the people of this country was misplaced. People don’t care about the things I write about; that is most people anyway. As long as they have a roof over their head, a flat screen TV, food on the table, and Wifi service the world could be burning around them and they wouldn’t care.
They don’t care that their liberty has been taken from them, that they pay upwards of 40% of their income in taxes, that their government has borrowed itself into a black hole we’ll never escape, and that it has built a surveillance apparatus and police state which is just a huge prison for all who inhabit this once free nation. All that needs doing is the cell door to be slammed shut upon them and maybe then the people will see what their ignorance has wrought.
Our Founders tried to warn people about what would happen if they became ignorant and corrupt. Numerous other writers have tried to warn you. I’ve tried to warn you about it as well. You’ve ignored all these warnings and continued to place party over principle, or vote for the lesser of two evils time and time again.
Soon, and I fear sooner than I prefer, it will be time to pay the piper; so to speak. I suppose in the loving embrace of tyranny there will be one bright side for you; you’ll no longer have to listen to me, as I will probably be dead by then. Believe me though, when tyranny final reveals itself for what it truly is you ‘ll have wished you’d listened to me when you still had a chance.
But that’s okay, maybe this is all just a bad dream and you will wake up soon and everything will be okay. Then again, maybe you won’t…
